At the risk of sounding horribly bias on the situation, I feel I need to interject and point out a possibility in the Israeli-Hamas conflict. There have been many incidents of civilians being killed and aid workers coming under fire, all of which has been blamed on Israel. While I do believe Israel is responsible for most of the the civilian deaths, I believe Hamas is responsible for many as well, and not in the way that many of us would generally be led to believe.
While it is true that Hamas does hide among civilians and use them as human shields, it is ultimately Israel’s fault for any civilians that are killed by Israeli fire, even though Hamas is to blame as well. However I believe there is more to this than meets the eye. With many incidents being reported, Israel has denied being responsible for some of the incidents where civilians or aid workers have come under fire.
Hamas is a very powerful grass roots movement that has the power of propaganda on their side. With everyone up in arms over this conflict, calling for a ceasefire, Israel and Hamas are being scrutinized by everyone. Israel is being looked at even harder though since they are considered a regional power and Hamas is ultimately a terrorist group. This gives Hamas a great edge because anything negative coming from this conflict will likely be blamed on Israel. Since Israel has denied involvement in some incidents, I think I can safely say that they will probably own up to most, if not all of the damage that they do. I’m not sure the Israelis really care about what the rest of the world thinks about them right now, as long as the US is standing behind them.
This leads me to believe that Hamas has been involved in part of the civilian casualties and the UN supply truck being hit, killing two aid workers and wounding another. Hamas has everything to gain from this happening, as it puts even more scrutiny and pressure on Israel to back off. Hamas seems to have no problem killing civilians, evident from their random rocket fire into Israel. It is very probable that Hamas was involved in these incidents and I believe we will see more if there is not a cease fire soon.
Israel has not allowed the press into Gaza since the conflict began so reporting from Gaza has been scarce, with most information coming from civilian independent sources who have taken pictures and made video of the situation surrounding them. So far there has been no indication of when the press will be allowed in. This is not acceptable in a democratic society, where a free press is heralded. Israel should let reporters go into Gaza on their own accord and be allowed to freely report the news.
The situation is looking very bleak for the 1.4 million people of Gaza, as 2/3’s of the population have no electricity and half have no water. Things could very well get a lot worse before they get better as it seems this conflict has no end in sight. The cease fires drawn up so far are not nearly good enough to end the fighting and I believe the Israelis may end up going completely in to fully take out Hamas. If Israel does go any further, then they will need to step up their efforts to protect and help civilians in the territory, possibly by setting up designated safe zones and actively distributing aid to civilians along side aid workers. They are just as much a part of the cause of all this grief as Hamas is, so every effort should be made to help the civilians who they have caused distress to.

I was looking through tax information earlier, and I made some discoveries that really shouldn’t be that startling, but they were a little. Everyone knows that every paycheck, they take out taxes, social security, and medicare. Some of us are always up in arms over this, some believe that the deductions are just, and the rest are either indifferent or just oblivious and they’re just happy to be getting some money. However, little does everyone know, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to government taxes. There are hidden taxes in everything we do and buy, you just may not realize it.
We’ll start with our place of employment, and then slowly work our way out. As most of you know, along with what we pay in taxes and deductions, our employer is required to match these amounts. That is good in theory, but if you think about it, in the end you’re just getting screwed over because your employer has anticipated this, and when they hire you at whatever starting wage you agree to, they have already made sure that you are starting at an amount that compensates them for the money they’re having to pay to the government to employ you. So in a sense, you yourself are actually paying your employer’s part by being paid less, where if they did not have to pay these “fees”, you would actually be getting payed more.
Now lets move a little further out to hidden service taxes. When you buy a plane ticket, a hotel room, a sporting event ticket, or when you get a vaccination, pay for insurance, obtain a license, and use public utilities, you are unknowingly taxed. On top of regular local and state taxes, these particular services are also federally taxed. You didn’t know this though because this tax is calculated into the cost already and passed directly on to you. Most of these services are generally relatively cheap, but when you add the federal taxes to the equation, they start to get expensive.
When you buy gasoline, alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and ammunition, you are unknowingly federally taxed. Gas is not as expensive as most make it out to be, and while yes the oil companies are still raking in billions per quarter, gas prices are inflated by federal tax. When you factor in how much everyone makes from the sale of gasoline, it comes close to equaling what the government makes in taxes. Alcohol and tobacco taxes are considered “sin taxes” and it is very easy for the government to make mass amounts of tax revenue by hidden taxes on these items. These 2 particular items are taxed at a higher rate then any other product in America. I like to call it the poor man’s tax, because these 2 products are mostly consumed by the middle and lower classes. From what I understand, before taxes, a 6-pack of beer that would normally cost around $5.59 would cost only $3.00 or so. If you were to buy a gun or ammunition, the general upcharge in taxes is around %10.
Certain companies and industries are taxed more or less in a government attempt to control consumer spending. This is where lobbyists come into play. All of these people lobbying for certain tax breaks or penalties imposed on different companies, are using political clout to propel their interests forward while pushing competitors back using taxes to do so. During all of this, the biggest loser here is you the consumer, because in the end, all increased taxes come back on you the consumer.
The government is using shady tactics to inflate their budgets, while slowly and quietly grabbing from our pockets in ways where most of us don’t even realize it’s happening. We are charged taxes either blindly or right under our nose, and by under our nose, they actually show us the taxes, but the burden is lessened greatly by taxing us slowly instead of in one great amount. I’m sure everyone will agree, they would have a bigger problem with paying taxes if at the end of every year, they had to write the government a check instead of getting a check back.
All I’m trying to say here is that we need to wake up and realize what is going on around us, in order for us all to make a much more informed decision. While politicians talk about cutting income taxes, the questions we should be asking them is what they plan to do about all of these hidden taxes that are truly hurting us all.

Sometimes I am astounded by the injustices and atrocities of the world, which is rare as I am not easily surprised when something happens in our often cruel world. We should live in a better world, we have the power to do so, but collective greed prevents it. Greed exists everywhere within every person, more in some then the others. These people that indulge in excessive amounts of greed, are often the worst people, who have the power to do the worst things.
Africa has always been a horrible place. The societies of the continent constantly fought one another in tribal warfare and these tribes would sell prisoners of war into slavery. Then came colonization, which wasn’t much better for the people of Africa. The colonial powers of the world viewed Africa as ripe in resources and available to be exploited. For many years Africa’s resources were used to fund wars and pad the coffers of the countries who had grabbed their piece of the colonial pie. A primitive continent was used and abused for years, not only by colonial powers, but their very own leaders as well. In a society of people with limited education and other basic necessities, they can be easily manipulated.
Over time, with such conditions, hatred and radicalism festers. Once we arrived at the modern age, colonies started to become a thing of the past. Replacing these colonies were countries with factions, each picking up where the colonial powers left off. They continued to abuse and take advantage of the people of Africa. This all led to a gap, the poor and the powerful, and that is what we have today. Men with power, consumed by greed, that do nothing to advance their society, only to advance themselves and their own agenda.
The country of Zimbabwe is one of many examples of these conditions. Robert Mugabe has held control of the country since 1980 after the country was released from British rule. He was a strong supporter of independence from the colonial powers throughout his life, which has earned him some fame among Africans. Last June, he won another 5 year term, however not without controversy. There had to be a runoff between Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai, the opposition leader. However before the runoff vote, Tsvangirai withdrew from the election as many of his supporters were killed and their homes set on fire by Mugabe forces. This in turn led to a landslide victory for Mugabe. Since then, a power sharing deal was reached between the two men, however currently there is deadlock over which ministers each of them will control.
Mugabe continues to run the country, unopposed. The country has fallen on severe hard times, with hundreds of thousands dieing from a Cholera outbreak as the country’s healthcare system has crumbled, millions are starving as there is no food. The country’s economic sector is nearly non-existant, as the inflation rate has skyrockted to over 14 mill percent. A loaf of bread costs 33 million Zimbabwe Dollars, which amounts to roughly 1 US Dollar. The country is in shambles, with many in the world calling for Mugabe’s resignation, he has refused. However the African Union refuses to do anything to intervene in the situation. Some AU leaders, such as the Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, have called for intervention though and support an AU or UN force going into the country to intevene. One can only hope that people such as PM Odinga, can be an agent of such change.
What should be done in this situation? It’s complicated, but a few options exist. An ideal situation would have African forces going in to help stabilize the country and bring about a new government. This would be the most beneficial solution, however at this point, the AU has rejected such actions. A UN force could be sent in, however the UN has miserably failed in its past and current peacekeeping missions in Africa, so I do not believe this would be any better. An independent group of nations could send a massive force to try and stabilize the country, however this could possibly cause a scenario similar to Iraq, which is not ideal.
I have my own solution though, and while some may not agree, I believe it will probably be the only way. The people of Africa need to unite against such leaders like Mugabe and lead a revolution to overthrow these people in order to help provide a better future for themselves. As it stands, the people of Africa face a very bleak future. They alone have the power to free themselves from such oppression and tyranny. Throwing money at this problem isn’t helping either, it just empowers these warlords and oppressors, giving them more money to put towards arming themselves even further against the poor.

I have always been a critic of our child support system. It’s an inefficient joke that needs to be restructured with new people running the program. I’ve read many stories of child support cases where many men have been ordered to pay support for children that weren’t theirs. However I came across a new story today, and it pretty much takes the cake.
Story Originally From Fox News
HARRISBURG, Pa. — A Philadelphia man was forced to pay more than $12,000 in child support for another man’s daughter and spent two years in jail for falling behind on payments.
Dauphin County prosecutor Edward M. Marsico Jr. told The Patriot-News of Harrisburg that he is examining the case of Walter Andre Sharpe Jr., who has been unable to recover the money even after establishing that he isn’t the girl’s father.
The investigation has no specific targets, Marsico said.
Sharpe’s troubles began in 2001, when he signed for a certified letter addressed to Andre Sharpe, the girl’s father. The letter ordered Andre Sharpe to attend a child support conference in Dauphin County, where the girl’s mother lived at the time.
Walter Sharpe, who was already supporting four children from a previous marriage, ignored the letter, and a judge ruled he was the father after neither man showed up. The county family welfare agency then began garnishing Walter Sharpe’s wages from his job at a trash-hauling company.
He served four six-month jail terms for not keeping up with support payments between 2001 and 2005, then lost his job. Petitions he filed for DNA testing were opposed by the court’s domestic relations officials and denied by the judge.
In May 2007, the paternity order against Walter Sharpe was overturned after the girl’s mother and grandmother failed to show up to a court hearing. But the judge ruled in October that Walter Sharpe was not entitled to compensation.
Walter Sharpe and his attorney, Tabetha Tanner, claim his identity was stolen in 2002, when he met with agency officials and provided identification showing he was not the father. Instead, his personal information was entered into the agency’s computer records, he said.
Officials in the court’s domestic relations office would not respond to the newspaper’s questions. They said in court papers that they determined Walter Sharpe was the father “after reasonable investigation.”
Andre Sharpe has said he has always supported the girl, who is now living with him in Philadelphia and about to graduate from high school.

Story found at http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,459068,00.html
You’ve probably heard about it already, if not, you need to read the story. Friday morning, Black Friday, the day I never leave the house because I know there are far too many idiots out and about to risk going out amongst them, something tragic happened. At a Walmart in New York, early in the morning around 5 am, a crowd of over 2000 people waited outside the store as it prepared to open for the day.
The deals and sales inside were so great that it was worth killing a man over. I say that with a heavy tone of sarcasm and disbelief. As an employee at the store was preparing to open the doors, the crowd became nothing more then a group of savages, as they ripped the doors off their metal frames and crushed them on top of the employee. The metal was crumpled like an accordian. These “people” trampled the man to death, no one stopped to help him, they continuously ran over him and other employees that tried to help the man. When the walmart employees tried to get all of the people to leave after they dicsovered that the man was seriously injured, people were upset that they couldn’t go shopping and some ignored the store’s employees and continued to shop, nevermind that they had just killed someone in their rush to go shopping.
I haven’t seen the video yet, thats the downside of having dial-up internet, I can’t watch any videos. However people I have talked to that have seen the video have said that a large man was the first through the door and seemed to intentionally knock the man to the ground and trample him. While I can’t say much about it since I have yet to see the video, I am already 100% positive that any person that was involved in the death of this man should be charged with murder.
We live in a civilized society and this sort of thing should NEVER happen and I’m sure I’m not the only person that is disgusted by the actions of these people. People are selfish and indifferent, and that leads to incidents like this one. I hope the majority of us have enough sense and morals to never act in such a manner. I would have stopped to help the man and I would have been outraged with the crowd of people, would you?

The Pirates today try to embark on a journey to improve Major League Baseball in the eyes of the world. Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel signed contracts with the Pittsburgh Pirates who are from Uttar Pradesh, India. This could very well usher in a very new territory that baseball could one day thrive in. Currently India is home to very enthusiastic base of Cricket fans.
Now lets take a break from this article and read up on what cricket is.
Click here to read up on Cricket
They will be the first professional baseball contracts in the MLB from India. Both were signed after a TV show called “Million Dollar Arm” drew many contestants. Patel is a right hander who threw in the 90’s during a tryout and Singh the left hander was in the 84 mph range.
I personally hope this experiment works out and India is opened up to baseball. It will add a whole new playing field to the game itself. A sport which is in trouble internationally with its removal from the Olympic-Games.

Marijuana is a mind altering drug, and not unlike its wet counterpart alcohol, it has the ability to unite or divide those discussing its place in American society.
According to federal surveys, more than 70 million Americans over the age of 18 have smoked marijuana. Its effects are described as an altered perception that causes feelings of well-being, relaxation and reduced stress. It has also been attributed to an increased appreciation of humor, food and music.
Its low toxicity is responsible for the well-known fact that marijuana has never directly caused a death. It was even reported by the Washington Post in 2006 that marijuana smoking, even in extreme cases, does not lead to lung cancer, while cigarettes cause 440,000 deaths a year.
So why is marijuana illegal in the first place? In a 2002 Zogby International poll, American’s ranked marijuana as far less dangerous than alcohol and cigarettes, yet those things can be bought by a legal patron at most gas stations.
Marijuana’s illegality is a matter of business history. In 1937, the marijuana tax was passed with help from anti-hemp newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst. The ferocious and corrupt Hearst had significant financial interest in the timber industry, and when it was found that hemp - cannabis grown for non-drug use - could be made into a stronger paper, he fought for a ban on cannabis plants completely by printing frivolous newspaper stories warning of marijuana’s dangers. The bill passed, due in large part to his financial support and, as they say, the rest is history.
In 2003, when the National Office of Drug Control Policy reported the government was spending $29 billion annually to prosecute and incarcerate marijuana users, the negative public response to the report sparked the largest interest in the pro-weed cause ever. In 2006, a Time/CNN poll stated 72 percent of Americans supported marijuana decriminalization, which reduces marijuana-use penalties to fines alone. Decriminalization has been implemented in 13 states, including Nebraska, and could reach 20 by 2010.
Could this increased interest in decriminalization ultimately lead to legal weed? It’s hard to say, but as the decriminalization movement gains steam, so does the legalization movement. With a modern legalization policy, the government could monitor who was buying this drug and at what age, just as they have done with alcohol and tobacco for years. Not only would it keep drug dealers from selling weed to kids, it would send a dagger into the stomach of the black market drug industry.
In 2006, marijuana was named America’s most valuable cash crop, with an estimated production value exceeding $35 billion annually, which exceeds corn and wheat production combined. By making marijuana a legal commodity, the government could keep drug dealers from banking off the drug’s mass appeal.
So what would happen if marijuana was legal? During the prohibition of the 1920s, people who wanted to drink continued to do so. The same can be said of marijuana prohibition. If weed were legalized, stoners would still get high, and non-users would still have the right to choose if marijuana was right for them or not.
In 2005, Harvard professor and economist Jeffrey Alan Miron issued a report that stated that marijuana should be legal and the crop should face taxes much like those seen with tobacco or alcohol. If realized, he predicted the United States would earn an estimated $6.2 billion annually. This extra tax revenue could be a real economic boom.
The ultimate gains the United States could see from legalized weed are far-reaching, but it’s a hard case to sell to those opposed to it. Many people have the stigma that weed ruins lives, when it can be said alcohol has ruined millions of more lives, yet it’s still legal. It also can be said that more than 3 million violent crimes are committed by drunken people every year and alcohol causes a rise in domestic and sexual abuse in American families.
Can the same be said of weed? If somebody’s husband or father smoked a joint before returning home for the night, would he want to beat his wife, high as a kite? The effects of marijuana have been said to block anger - especially physical anger.
Maybe if marijuana were legal, our murder and domestic abuse rates would drop, or our economy wouldn’t be in trouble. Maybe our jails wouldn’t be full of people whose lives are ruined because they got caught with weed and more people would take time to sit back and realize that the good things in our world outweigh the bad.
Maybe everything would be different.

Sin Taxes ought to be illegal, and more then likely they probably are. I can’t argue one way or the other there though because I’m not sure about the that particular issue, but that isn’t really the point of this article.
Here over the past couple of years, many states have raised the sin tax on alcoholic and tobacco products reasoning that they would be doing everyone a favor by reducing sales of these products and bring more money into local and state coffers. They have succeeded in doing both, they have slightly decreased the sale of these products and have greatly expanded their tax revenues. I just have to question the fact that these two things made us all better off.
Seems to me that taxes are always on the rise and rarely decreasing, so this hasn’t done anything to help us there except allow government to spend more and more. Sales have decreased, but not by much, and I can’t really see how this has made us a better society. I know the original intent to raise the sin tax on tobacco products was to get people to quit using them, however is that really the job of the government, to police our private lives? They couldn’t make tobacco illegal because it wouldn’t be popular and they wouldn’t get all those juicy taxes they are accustomed to, so their solution was to just raise the taxes on something they deemed to be evil.
I’ll keep it short. Times are tough these days, yet all the government seems to care about is getting more and more of our money, which for the most part, is wasted. Seems to me more like taxation without representation.

Where has it gone? When did it go exactly? If you know the answer to these two questions, please, feel free to share, because I don’t know. Now don’t get me wrong, there are still some objective reporters out there, just very few of them. I won’t got off on a tangent throwing names around, but every major news outlet is guilty of taking sides instead of looking at issues in an objective manner.
Personally, I watch Fox News, and for those nay sayers that never have anything good to say about Fox News, don’t speak too quickly unless you plan to throw CNN, MSNBC, and all the others in there too, as they’re all guilty as well. Fox News runs some bias through sometimes, however the others do it on an even more consistent basis. I’ve been turned off to a lot of it all as a result. I find I’m watching less news these days for the fact that everyone is either regurgitating the same thing, or spouting off their opinion about something instead of actually reporting the pros and cons of each issue.
However I will step up and take one swing at the big leagues, and while I know he’ll probably never read this or anything else I have to say, it doesn’t change the truth of the matter in the least bit and I’m sure I’ll have some people that are in agreement with me on this one.
I was watching the O’Reilly Factor last night, I had set the channel to change when House came on, but for some reason it never changed, so I ended up watching part of his show while I was playing the new guitar I got the other day. Generally, Bill says a lot of stuff that makes a lot of sense, and he’s right on some issues, however there is generally always some segment of his show that I don’t agree with, whether it be the issue itself, or the way he presents the issue.
A segment of his show last night was what would the rest of the country be like if we had San Francisco’s morals and values. First of all, why is this even a segment? I’m sure there are a lot more important things going on in the world that he could cover besides what San Francisco may be like. I have to say, he has never had much love for California, mostly because he believes that they have poor morals and also because it is a largely Democrat state. It’s no secret he doesn’t like most Democrats.
The entire segment features a reporter interviewing different people on the streets, however it only covers a handful of things. Most of the segment was about people being able to openly smoke marijuana and then trying to directly relate that to homeless people “hippies” traveling in groups and staying in parks and pretty much being a problem, though that problem is never actually stated. The segment also seems to try and link smoking marijuana with crime problems in the city and the fact that certain places aren’t safe to go at night and how New York is a much safer city. There was also a comment about the reporting watching a drug deal go down outside of city hall, but most of me says BS on that. It seems to me though, that if there were police actually patrolling these problem areas, they would be a lot safer, and that it has very little to do with marijuana, which he seems to try and demonize the entire time. He also goes on to show pictures of cross dressers, hookers, and pornography shops. There was also footage of bad parts of town as well.
After watching the segment, not factoring anything in, yeah the city seems pretty horrible and you would be led to be in agreement with him. However if you are so weak minded that you readily accept what he tries to spoonfeed people on a regular basis, you easily miss that most big cities are not very different from San Francisco and that we only saw the bad parts of the city and none of the good parts. Instead of attacking the problems and providing solutions, the entire segment seemed like a smear campaign against the city and marijuana, and to a lesser extent, gay people. It seems like several people on Fox News have a problem with gay marriage as well and it seems to me that they have been very partial to the new law that was recently voted on and passed and have been against the gay rights protesters.
There will come a point when big media gets so sloppy that they start clearing the path for smaller contenders to come in and do the job better unless they start to shape up.
Two of my previously written articles that relate to this thread that may be of interest are Gay Marriage and Taking A Controversial Stance
